Intricacies is a 64 page, 6.75×10 inch, hardcover book featuring 27 collaboratively drawn illustrations. It is bound in a warm grey linen, with the title stamped on the cover and spine in a slightly reflective fun-metal foil. The illustrations are offset printed on a natural toned archival paper; a thick 80 lb stock that feels good to the touch. It even has a special sewn binding so that when open (with a little bending encouragement) the pages lay flat. Every inch of this book is designed to tickle your senses.
In June, Zoe Keller and I left our homes and jobs to relocate to a tiny studio in Hudsonville, Michigan. Here, we committed ourselves to a slower kind of living. We took the time to observe the natural world around us and focused our studio efforts exclusively on the series of illustrations for this book. For five months we had a joyful stream of collaboration where we constantly bounced both concepts and actual drawings back and forth between our desks until a page was full.
The original illustrations in Intricacies measure 15” x 11” and were drawn in graphite, each taking between 30 to 50 hours to complete. They are the product of long, quiet periods of observation on the ten acres of land that surround our Michigan studio, and in landscapes past. With our tight drawing style and love of detail, we have woven rich natural imagery into precarious moments that hint at stories of heartache and personal growth. We’re hoping that when everything is moving too fast, that slipping into these illustrations can give you the slow, quiet space that we had this summer. We hope that maybe they will give you reason to pause and notice the small, mysterious things that lie just out of sight in our everyday.
